How to Evolve Porygon: Scarlet/Violet, Arceus & More

Porygon may look like a low-poly duck assembled by a computer running on three megabytes of memory, but its evolution process is surprisingly sophisticated. Unlike Pokémon that simply need experience points, friendship, or a conveniently placed rock, Porygon requires special electronic itemsand, in most games, help from another player.

The complete Porygon evolution line is Porygon → Porygon2 → Porygon-Z. The first evolution normally requires an Upgrade, while the second requires a Dubious Disc. The exact procedure changes depending on the game, however. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet use traditional trade evolutions, Pokémon Legends: Arceus lets you apply the items directly, and Pokémon GO replaces trading with Candy and special evolution items.

This guide explains how to evolve Porygon in Scarlet and Violet, Legends: Arceus, Pokémon GO, Legends: Z-A, Sword and Shield, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and other major games. Think of it as technical support for a digital bird that refuses to install its own updates.

Porygon Evolution Requirements at a Glance

Game Porygon to Porygon2 Porygon2 to Porygon-Z
Pokémon Scarlet/Violet Trade while holding an Upgrade Trade while holding a Dubious Disc
Pokémon Legends: Arceus Use an Upgrade directly Use a Dubious Disc directly
Pokémon GO 25 Porygon Candy plus an Upgrade 100 Porygon Candy plus a Sinnoh Stone
Pokémon Legends: Z-A Trade while holding an Upgrade Trade while holding a Dubious Disc
Sword/Shield and BDSP Trade while holding an Upgrade Trade while holding a Dubious Disc
Most older mainline games Trade while holding an Upgrade Trade while holding a Dubious Disc

Important: An Upgrade is not the same thing as a normal software update, and a Dubious Disc is not a music album your Rotom downloaded from a suspicious website. They are separate evolution items, and each is consumed when the evolution occurs.

How to Evolve Porygon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Porygon appears in The Indigo Disk, the second part of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero expansion. You therefore need access to the DLC and Blueberry Academy’s Terarium if you want to catch one directly in Pokémon Scarlet or Violet.

Where to Find Porygon

Wild Porygon can appear in areas of the Polar Biome, Canyon Biome, and Chargestone Cavern. Searching caves around the Polar Biome is a particularly straightforward approach. Porygon is genderless and has a relatively distinctive angular body, so it is difficult to confuse with anything else unless a geometry textbook has escaped into the Terarium.

You may also transfer a compatible Porygon into the game through Pokémon HOME. However, transferring it does not activate a trade evolution. You still need the correct held item and an in-game trade.

How to Get an Upgrade and Dubious Disc

The easiest repeatable way to obtain both evolution items is through the School Store at Blueberry Academy. An Upgrade costs 250 BP, and a Dubious Disc also costs 250 BP. BP is earned primarily by completing Blueberry Quests, commonly called BBQs.

Solo quests work, but completing group quests through the Union Circle can produce BP much faster. A Dubious Disc can also be found as an overworld pickup in the Polar Biome, and additional copies of these items may be available through Pokédex progress or other DLC reward systems.

Step 1: Evolve Porygon into Porygon2

  1. Place Porygon in your party or open your Boxes.
  2. Give Porygon the Upgrade as its held item.
  3. Arrange a Link Trade with a trusted player.
  4. Trade the Porygon while it is holding the Upgrade.
  5. Porygon will evolve into Porygon2 when the trade is completed.
  6. Ask the other player to trade your Porygon2 back.

Do not choose “Use this item” from the Bag. In Scarlet and Violet, Porygon must hold the Upgrade during the trade. Giving it the item and then leaving it in a Box will accomplish exactly as much as putting a USB drive next to a toaster.

Step 2: Evolve Porygon2 into Porygon-Z

  1. Receive Porygon2 back from your trade partner.
  2. Give Porygon2 the Dubious Disc.
  3. Start another Link Trade.
  4. Trade Porygon2 while it holds the Dubious Disc.
  5. It will evolve into Porygon-Z.
  6. Have your partner return the newly evolved Pokémon.

You cannot equip the Dubious Disc until the first trade is finished and Porygon has become Porygon2. Plan on two separate trades in each direction if you want your original Pokémon back.

How to Evolve Porygon in Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the friendliest game for solo Porygon fans. There are no held items in the traditional sense, so no trade partner is needed. Instead, the Upgrade and Dubious Disc work like evolution stones.

Where to Catch Porygon in Legends: Arceus

Porygon can be found inside space-time distortions in the Crimson Mirelands. It does not normally wander around the Mirelands outside these events, which makes catching one less predictable than finding a standard regional spawn.

When a distortion begins forming, remain in the area until it becomes active. Enter the distorted zone, watch for aggressive Pokémon, and check each group that appears. Porygon2 and Porygon-Z may also appear in Crimson Mirelands distortions, potentially allowing you to catch an evolved form without using an item.

How to Get the Evolution Items

The Trading Post in Jubilife Village sells an Upgrade for 1,000 Merit Points and a Dubious Disc for 1,400 Merit Points. Merit Points are earned by retrieving lost satchels and returning them through the Lost & Found menu.

Both items can also appear on the ground inside space-time distortions. Ginter may occasionally sell them under unusual product descriptions, although his inventory rotates. Collect every item inside a distortion before leaving; even when you do not find the disc you need, the other valuables can make the trip worthwhile.

Use the Items Directly

  1. Open the Satchel and select the Upgrade.
  2. Choose Porygon as the target.
  3. Confirm the evolution into Porygon2.
  4. Select the Dubious Disc from the Satchel.
  5. Use it on Porygon2 to evolve it into Porygon-Z.

The Linking Cord does not work for these evolutions. That item replaces ordinary trade requirements, but Porygon normally evolves through a trade involving a specific held item. Legends: Arceus solves the problem by letting you use the Upgrade or Dubious Disc directly.

How to Evolve Porygon in Pokémon GO

Pokémon GO uses a completely different system. Trading is unnecessary, the Dubious Disc is not used, and Candy becomes part of the bill.

Porygon to Porygon2

To evolve Porygon into Porygon2, you need:

  • 25 Porygon Candy
  • One Upgrade

Open Porygon’s information screen and tap the evolution button once both requirements are available. Upgrades may be awarded through research, events, and certain PokéStop-related rewards. They are much rarer than ordinary items, so avoid discarding one merely because it resembles a compact blue square from 1997.

Porygon2 to Porygon-Z

To complete the evolution line, you need:

  • 100 Porygon Candy
  • One Sinnoh Stone

Sinnoh Stones can appear through research breakthroughs, Trainer Battles, GO Battle League rewards, special research, and limited events. Availability and reward pools can change, so event research is often the fastest opportunity to collect one.

If Candy is your main obstacle, use Pinap Berries when catching Porygon, transfer unwanted duplicates, walk with Porygon as your buddy, and save Rare Candy for the final 100-Candy requirement.

How to Evolve Porygon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

In the Mega Dimension DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Porygon can appear in three-star Hyperspace Wild Zones. Despite the “Legends” name, its evolution method does not copy Legends: Arceus.

Porygon must be traded while holding an Upgrade to become Porygon2. Porygon2 must then be traded while holding a Dubious Disc to become Porygon-Z. Evolution items can appear as rewards in higher-ranked Hyperspace Wild Zones, while the side mission Porygon’s Polygon Count provides another route to Porygon2 and a Dubious Disc.

This distinction is easy to miss: Legends: Arceus permits direct item use, but Legends: Z-A returns to held-item trading. Apparently, even fictional software can lose a convenient feature in a later release.

How to Evolve Porygon in Sword and Shield

Porygon is available through The Isle of Armor expansion. After progressing through the Isle of Armor story and defeating Mustard in the relevant final battle, speak with Hyde inside the Master Dojo to receive Porygon.

An Upgrade can be found in the Training Lowlands, while the Dubious Disc is located in the Workout Sea. The evolution process follows the traditional formula:

  1. Trade Porygon while it holds an Upgrade.
  2. Receive the evolved Porygon2 back.
  3. Give Porygon2 a Dubious Disc.
  4. Trade it again to produce Porygon-Z.

The Cram-o-matic can also provide methods of obtaining certain items, but collecting the guaranteed overworld items is simpler when you only need one complete evolution line.

How to Evolve Porygon in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, Porygon is primarily a postgame Pokémon. After unlocking the National Pokédex, speak to Mr. Backlot at the Pokémon Mansion on Route 212. Porygon can become one of the special daily Pokémon appearing in the Trophy Garden.

Professor Oak gives you an Upgrade in Eterna City after you obtain the National Pokédex. A Dubious Disc can be collected on Route 225 by crossing the small body of water behind the house.

Once again, trade Porygon while it holds the Upgrade, retrieve Porygon2, equip the Dubious Disc, and complete a second trade. Sinnoh may be a region full of myths, deities, and spacetime anomalies, but it still cannot provide a “skip trade evolution” checkbox.

How Porygon Evolves in Older Pokémon Games

The Upgrade was introduced in Generation II with Porygon2. Porygon-Z arrived in Generation IV alongside the Dubious Disc. In most compatible mainline games released since then, the evolution rules remain the same:

  • Porygon evolves when traded while holding an Upgrade.
  • Porygon2 evolves when traded while holding a Dubious Disc.

The locations of the items vary by region. They may be found in the overworld, purchased with Battle Points, received from an NPC, or obtained from a special facility. Some games include Porygon but not its later evolutions. In Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, for example, the Pokédex is limited to earlier species, so Porygon cannot evolve into Porygon2.

Porygon is notable for being the only Pokémon whose main evolutionary line traditionally requires two separate trades. It is less an evolution chain and more an elaborate test of whether your friend will actually give your Pokémon back.

Should You Keep Porygon2 or Evolve It into Porygon-Z?

Porygon-Z is not automatically the best choice for every team. Porygon2 is generally built for defense and support. Because it is not fully evolved, it can hold an Eviolite, dramatically improving its defensive stats in games where the item is available. Combined with moves such as Recover, Thunder Wave, Ice Beam, and Trick Room, Porygon2 can be frustratingly difficult to remove.

Porygon-Z is the more aggressive option. It has much higher Special Attack and can make excellent use of abilities such as Adaptability or Download. Its Normal-type attacks can hit extremely hard, while moves such as Tri Attack, Hyper Beam, Shadow Ball, Thunderbolt, and Ice Beam provide useful coverage.

Choose Porygon2 when you want a bulky support Pokémon. Choose Porygon-Z when you want a special attacker capable of turning digital instability into somebody else’s emergency.

Common Porygon Evolution Problems

The Trade Did Not Trigger an Evolution

Confirm that the Pokémon was holding the correct item before the trade began. Porygon needs the Upgrade, while Porygon2 needs the Dubious Disc. Reversing the items will not work.

I Used the Upgrade but Nothing Happened

Direct item use works in Legends: Arceus, not in most other mainline games. In Scarlet/Violet, Sword/Shield, BDSP, and Legends: Z-A, the item must be held during a trade.

The Linking Cord Does Not Work on Porygon

In Legends: Arceus, use the Upgrade and Dubious Disc directly. The Linking Cord is intended for Pokémon with ordinary trade evolutions rather than evolutions involving a special held item.

I Lost My Porygon During a Trade

Use a trusted friend or arrange a mirror trade in which both players send the same evolution Pokémon. Avoid sending a valuable Shiny Porygon to an unknown player unless the return arrangement is clear. A trade code connects players; it does not provide customer service, escrow protection, or a tiny digital lawyer.

Practical Experience: Making the Porygon Evolution Process Easier

The most useful experience-based lesson is to prepare everything before opening the trade screen. Many failed or unnecessarily long Porygon evolution sessions begin with one player owning an Upgrade but forgetting the Dubious Disc, or with the second item sitting on a different save file. Check your Bag, confirm the two items, place Porygon in an easy-to-find Box, and verify that your trade partner understands that two evolutions are required.

In Scarlet and Violet, a clean trade session usually works best as a four-trade sequence. First, send Porygon with the Upgrade. Second, have the partner return Porygon2. Leave the trade menu if necessary, give Porygon2 the Dubious Disc, and reconnect. Third, send Porygon2. Fourth, receive Porygon-Z. Trying to improvise this sequence while scrolling through 30 Boxes is how a two-minute job becomes an archaeological expedition.

Using a duplicate Porygon is also smart when completing a regional Pokédex. Keep one Porygon untouched, evolve a second into Porygon2, and evolve a third all the way into Porygon-Z if you want all three available simultaneously. Otherwise, registering each form and keeping only Porygon-Z is perfectly sufficient for Pokédex completion. Breeding or catching extras before trading can prevent the familiar moment when you realize your living Pokédex now has a Porygon-Z-shaped hole where Porygon used to be.

Players hunting a Shiny Porygon should take additional precautions. Save before beginning, double-check the recipient’s name, and use someone you trust. Saving cannot reverse a completed online trade, but it can protect you from unrelated mistakes such as equipping the wrong item or accidentally selecting a different Porygon. Nicknaming the intended Pokémon or placing it alone in a dedicated Box makes selection safer.

Legends: Arceus offers the smoothest solo experience. Once the items are available, both evolutions take only a few menu selections. The real time investment is finding Porygon and collecting Merit Points. Returning lost satchels regularly is more efficient than waiting until the exact moment you need 2,400 points. It is the Hisuian equivalent of keeping an emergency fund, except the emergency is a polygonal duck refusing to evolve.

Pokémon GO requires a different kind of planning. The Upgrade may arrive long before you have enough Candy, while a Sinnoh Stone may remain stubbornly absent after Porygon2 is ready. Avoid evolving the first Porygon you catch solely to fill the Pokédex. Compare appraisal results, consider whether you want the Pokémon for battle, and collect the full 125 Candy whenever possible before starting. Event periods featuring Porygon are ideal because they often provide extra encounters, Candy, or evolution items.

Finally, decide whether you genuinely want Porygon-Z. Competitive and challenge-run players often prefer Eviolite Porygon2 for its durability. Evolving is permanent, so do not install the “dubious” software patch simply because the button is available. Sometimes the allegedly unfinished version is the dependable professional, while the final upgrade is the brilliant coworker who can produce extraordinary results but occasionally appears to have consumed six energy drinks.

Conclusion

To evolve Porygon in most mainline Pokémon games, trade it while it holds an Upgrade, then trade Porygon2 while it holds a Dubious Disc. Pokémon Legends: Arceus removes the trading requirement and lets you apply both items directly. Pokémon GO instead requires 25 Candy and an Upgrade for Porygon2, followed by 100 Candy and a Sinnoh Stone for Porygon-Z.

The process may change slightly from one region to another, but the basic theme never does: Porygon evolves through increasingly questionable software. Gather the right items, choose a reliable trading partner, and decide whether your team needs the defensive stability of Porygon2 or the glorious digital chaos of Porygon-Z.
